Brynhildr in the Darkness ( Japanese 極 黒 の ブ リ ュ ン ヒ ル デ , Gokukoku no Buryunhirude , German "pitch black Brynhildr ") is a manga by Lynn Okamoto , which was also adapted as an anime .

The manga, which thematically resembles Okamoto's best-known work Elfen Lied , has been published since 2012. It is about the eleventh grader Ryōta, who helps several girls with magical powers to survive. It can be classified into the genres of Dark Fantasy and Science Fiction ( Science Fantasy ).

action

Ryota's childhood friend Kuroneko believed in aliens . When she tried to show him where she saw some, she tragically dies. Since that day Ryōta wants to prove that there are aliens. One day a student named Neko Kuroha changes to his class. Not only her name, but also her appearance remind Ryōta of Kuroneko. On the other hand, she regards him as a stranger and says that she cannot remember anything. When Neko Ryōta later saves his life, he learns that she has endured experiments in a laboratory and has since mastered a certain “magic of destruction”. As a sign of its kind, it has a neck on Harnest ( ハーネスト , hānesuto , "nest"). She recently escaped from the laboratory and is on the run.

The next day, Ryōta visits her house and comes across Kana Tachibana, also a fugitive from the said laboratory, in remote ruins. She is physically paralyzed and can predict the future. When Neko, after performing at school for a day with many bandages, does not show up at school, Ryōta visits her again. Neko lies in her dwelling covered in blood and he learns that she has to take a special medication every day to survive. Since her supply is very limited, she tried to survive on a pill for several days, with these consequences.

Meanwhile, the laboratory, led by Chisato Ichijiku, is trying to recapture the escaped test subjects, whom they refer to as "witches". When Neko's house burns down, the two fugitive witches lose their supply of pills and decide to break into the manufacturing plant and steal pills. To do this, they get help from Kazumi Schlierenzauer, who can manipulate the security systems. The laboratory has put another witch named Saori on the refugees. There is a sensor on your urine that can press the ejection button. After Neko and Ryōta defeat their adversary, the sensor is activated, causing Saori to die. A small creature (alien) appears, which lives in the urine. After Ryōta has crushed them, they both make their way home with a few pills and are expected in the observatory by Kazumi and Kana. In addition, Ryōta receives a terminal and a capsule with an alien embryo.

A little later, a new student, Kotori Takatori, registers for the astronomy course. They find out that she is also a fugitive and has teleportation skills. Together they defeat another, much stronger witch from the laboratory. Ryōta then decides to initiate his uncle. Kogorō Hashiratani is Professor of Biochemistry at the local university. He immediately tries to duplicate the pills, as the girls' supplies will be used up within a month. During the analysis, however, he finds that the process will take six months.

When Ryōta and Kazumi are in a busy district, he activates the terminal, which reveals a map with a marker. They find the place and Ryōta investigates. In the meantime, the laboratory continues to try to recapture all refugees. They put an employee and Nanami Toko, a girl with the ability to control thoughts, on the troops around Neko. When Nanami tracks them down, a fight ensues. Since Nanami realizes early on that it is pointless, he ends without losses. A short time later, her urine is also ejected by the employee using a remote control and she dies.

In view of the failures, the organization of the laboratory cannot afford any further defeats and sends the strongest weapon - a Valkyrie - along with a troop of other obedient witches to the region. Once there, the Valkyrie, Mako Fujisaki, gets rid of her guardians. A girl with regenerative skills, Hatsuna Wakabayashi, survived the Valkyrie's attack and heads to the observatory to warn the refugees.

Ryōta meets again with his uncle, who tells him that while analyzing the pills, he has found parallels to research by a former colleague, Chisato Ichijiku, and that the pills can be produced within a month. Since the girls' supply of pills will only last for a week, the mood in the group is very sad. Shortly afterwards, the Valkyrie and Chisato arrive at the observatory. Ryōta secretly activates the terminal, hoping the built-in GPS transmitter would reveal their position and lead someone to them. In the fight it turns out that the lab is only of interest to Kotori, and the Valkyrie is Neko's older sister. When the fight seems hopeless for the girls, the "witch hunters" appear. Nevertheless, Chisato manages to escape with the Valkyrie and Kotori.

The witch hunters are an organization that rebels against the laboratory. Of them learns Ryota that Drasil in Harnest to Grane ( グラーネ ) grow and after hatching devour the host body and feed exclusively on human flesh. Kotori houses a special grane in her urine. Chisato fed it with the brain of his late sister Rena in the hope that her consciousness would take over the body. Furthermore, after hatching, the Grane is supposed to release the Ain Soph Aur (light that rules over life), which melts the cells of all living beings. When the grane slips and the light spreads across the globe, Kotori presses the ejection button on her urine nest. When Chisato and the Valkyrie meet Neko, Ryōta and the witch hunters, the decisive battle ensues. Neko presses her third button on the harness and is now equal to the Valkyrie. In the further fight Chisato sacrifices himself for the Valkyrie, who wants to kill everyone in a subsequent retaliatory strike using antimatter . Neko can counter their attack with a black hole and survives unharmed. In doing so, she loses her memories again. At the same time, Kogorō speaks on Ryōta's answering machine and says that they have made significant progress in synthesizing the pills.
