A chimney container is a ring-shaped water container that is attached around an industrial chimney , which allows it to act as a water tower. However, the volume of the container is naturally less than that of a full cylinder. Chimney containers have the advantage that the mostly warm chimney gases prevent the risk of the water in the container freezing.

This design was first used by Otto Intze in 1885 .

During the early days of the founding , the demand for water increased sharply, but since the construction costs of a classic water tower were often too high for tanks with volumes below 100 m³ due to the complex substructure, Intze designed the design of the chimney tank. At a height of 20 to 30 meters, the container was placed in a ring around the chimney and supported by consoles or cornices .
