The color temperature of daylight changes during the day. It is around 2000 K just after sunrise or before sunset , around 3500 K during the golden hour, and around 5500 K at noon . The color temperature can also change significantly as a result of altitude, geographical latitude and weather conditions.

When the sun is just above the horizon , the rays of light have to travel a greater distance through the earth's atmosphere, which reduces the intensity of the direct light. Light of shorter wavelengths, especially blue light, is more likely to be scattered laterally by Rayleigh scattering , so that the color of direct sunlight shifts to reddish. In addition, the small angle of the sun creates longer shadows.

The term golden hour is used figuratively. The effect has no defined duration and changes depending on geographical latitude and season .
