The museum is located on the first floor of the Steinmann Institute at Nußallee 8 in Bonn. The building from 1911 was designed by the architect Robert Schulze. He created a building that was comparatively simple for the time, combining a few stylistic elements of classicism and baroque . It can be entered through a large portal. It is framed by Ionic columns with a central projection. It is decorated with the Latin saying Mente et mallo , which means: "First think with your mind, then tap with the hammer". Since the building was dedicated to geology , Schulze used granite for the columns in the stairwell on the ground floor, lime on the middle floor and red sandstone on the upper floor to symbolize the different geological ages.

history

When the University of Bonn was founded on October 18, 1818, the natural science institutes came to Poppelsdorf Castle on the initiative of Georg Goldfuß . Goldfuß was the director of the Natural History Museum until 1848 and campaigned for the opening of its own exhibition. In 1882 the paleontological museum moved to the main building of the university until it was able to move into the new building on Nussallee in 1911 on the initiative of Gustav Steinmann. Originally it was planned that another building wing for the mineralogy should be built in the inner courtyard. However, the Institute for Paleontology moved there in 1963. After the Goldfuß Museum was initially only accessible to the specialist public, it has been open to the general public again since the early 1990s.

collection

The extensive fossil collection goes back to the beginnings of the university and still has an original exhibition room from 1910. It includes a continuously open systematic collection showing a large variety of fossilized marine animals and plants. There are also dinosaur skeletons on display, including a T-Rex skull and a snake - necked lizard , as well as a four-meter-long ichthyosaur . This exhibition can be seen in the rear area. Changing special exhibitions are shown in the front room. A special exhibition entitled Naked Ferns and Sequoias opened on December 29, 2019 .
