Per Winge (born August 27, 1858 in Kristiania , † September 7, 1935 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian composer, conductor, pianist and organist.

Life

The son of the consul and music lover Axel Winge began studying law at the University of Kristiania in 1875 after attending the cathedral school . He also took piano lessons with Otto Winter-Hjelm and Edmund Neupert and lessons in music theory with Johan Svendsen . He then studied music in Leipzig (1883–84) and Berlin (1884–86). In 1886 he made his debut with the performance of his own works in Kristiania.

From 1886 to 1888 he conducted the orchestra of the Musikselskabet Harmoniens in Bergen, after which he worked as an organist and music teacher in Drammen. 1893-94 he was second conductor of the Musikforeningen in Kristiania, then until 1899 Kapellmeister at the city's theater. When he was conducting the music by Frederick Delius for the piece at a performance of Gunnar Heiberg's Folkeraadet here in 1897 , the painter Albert Tønnesen shot a revolver loaded with loose gunpowder several times at him and finally threw it at him. The reason was a piece in the minor key from the national anthem Ja, vi elsker dette lands .

From 1899 to 1902 Winge was Kapellmeister at Centralteatret , after which he returned to the National Theater. From 1908 to 1927 he was organist at Grønland kirke . He also taught at the Kristiania Conservatory from 1895 to 1920 and was a music teacher at various high schools until 1931. From 1916 to 1919 he was the choirmaster of the Norske Studentersangforening .

Winges' compositional oeuvre includes 60 romances and choral works, a piano trio, a violin sonata and theatrical music to Holger Drachmann's Tusig och en nat , Barbra Rings Köngens hjerte (1910), Hans Wiers-Jenssen No. 333 , Ludvig Müller's Den nye Lensmanden and Vilhelm Krag's Livet en leg . In 1920 he was awarded the Golden Kongens fortjenstmedalje , and he also received the Litteris et Artibus medal . Winge was the grandson of the lawyer Peder Carl Lasson and cousin of the composers Halfdan Kjerulf , Paul Winge and Per Lasson , the painter Oda Krohg and the singer Bokken Lasson .
