Otto Winter-Hjelm
Otto Winter-Hjelm (born October 8, 1837 in Christiania , † May 3, 1931 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian composer, conductor, organist, music critic and teacher.
Life
Winter-Hjelm began studying theology after graduating from Christiania's Cathedral School in 1855. He also took piano lessons from Wilhelm Hermann Neupert and was a student of Halfdan Kjerulf , who advised him to study music. 1857–58 he studied at the Leipzig Conservatory . After his return to Christiania he became a composition student of Carl Arnold , under whose guidance his first work, a piano trio, was composed.
With a public scholarship he continued his education at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin from 1861 to 1863 with Theodor Kullak and Richard Wüerst . Here, along with other works, he composed his Symphony in B flat major, which is considered the first classical symphony by a Norwegian composer. On his return he became the conductor of the Christiania Philharmonic Society. In 1864 he founded a music school with the violinist Gudbrand Bøhn , at which poor students received free lessons. He devoted himself to promoting folk music in school lessons and wrote a piano school with folk music arrangements of increasing difficulty.
With Edvard Grieg he expanded the school into a music academy in 1867. This lasted only a short time, but had students like Per Winge , Per Lasson and Halfdan Cleve . From 1874 to 1921 he was organist at the Trefoldighetskirken . Here he was in the hymn controversy ( Salmesangstriden ) adversary of Ludvig Mathias Lindeman . In 1876 he published 37 ældre Salmemelodier with scientific comments . In the winter semester of 1886-87 he held a well-attended series of lectures on Musikens Elementer at the University of Kristiana . From 1886 to 1913 he regularly wrote music reviews for the Aftenposten
