Appearance

The black pigeon reaches a body length between 25.5 and 30 centimeters, depending on the subspecies. It is very similar to the blotched green pigeon . The face and throat are yellow-green. The breast plumage is covered in mauve colors. The lower abdomen is yellowish. The tail feathers are broadly lined with light gray at the end. The under tail-coverts are light brown. The wing feathers have a yellow border at the end, so that the wing covers have a yellow stripe about 5 millimeters wide.

Spread and behavior

The European green pigeon occurs from India via Assam to Bangladesh and the islands of Hainan and Java . Like all green pigeons it is a tree-dwelling pigeon species. Wild figs, dates and berries represent a large part of their food spectrum. The nests are usually built in trees that stand on the edge of a forest opening. The nest is small and only loosely assembled. A clutch consists of two eggs.
