The gold- leaved knapweed ( Centaurea cheiranthifolia ), also called yellow-violet knapweed , is a species of knapweed ( Centaurea ) in the sunflower family (Asteraceae).
features
The gold lacquer-leaved knapweed is a perennial plant that reaches heights of 10 to 45 centimeters. It forms a pleiocorm - rhizome . The plant is densely woolly, flaky and white-gray, less often gray-green. The flower stems are prostrate-ascending and simple or with a few short branches. The basal leaves are lanceolate, undivided, and rarely have 1 to 2 (3) lobes or coarse teeth. The stem leaves are lanceolate, the upper ones are sessile and descending on the stem. The shell is spherical-egg-shaped and has a diameter of 18 to 25 millimeters. The marginal flowers of the heads have a diameter of 4.5 to 8 centimeters and are bright and creamy white (var. Cheiranthifolia ) or purple-pink (var. Purpurascens (DC.) Wagenitz). The envelope flower appendages are 4 to 7 millimeters long, broadly triangular, descending, blackish brown and have numerous silver, 2.5 to 4 millimeters long fringes.
Flowering time is from June to July.
Occurrence
The gold-leaved knapweed occurs in northeast Turkey, in the Caucasus and in western Iran on volcanic rocks, grassy slopes and in sparse birch and pine forests as well as in tall herbaceous fields at altitudes of 1900 to 3000 meters.
use
The gold-leaved knapweed is rarely used as an ornamental plant in rock gardens. It has probably been in culture since 1990.
