Gondiães is a place and a former municipality in northern Portugal .

The place is badly affected by emigration. Since the 1960s in particular, people have emigrated from here to Central Europe, for example to France and Luxembourg.

The parish church Igreja de São Martinho is a listed building .

Population development in the municipality of Gondiães (1864–2011)

Gondiães was the seat of a community of the same name ( Freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Cabeceiras de Basto in the Braga district . The community had an area of ​​21.4 km² and 224 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). The former name of the place is Gondiães e Samão .

Three localities belonged to the municipality of Gondiães:

  • Gondiães
  • Samão
  • Torneiro

With the territorial reform of September 29, 2013 , the municipalities of Gondiães and Vilar de Cunhas were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Gondiães e Vilar de Cunhas . Gondiães is the seat of this newly formed community.
