Vilar de Cunhas is a place and a former municipality ( freguesia ) in northern Portugal .

The village of Uz belonged to the territory of the municipality of Vilar de Cunhas and gained some fame after 2014 through the documentary film Volta à Terra .

history

Livestock and agriculture have been practiced here for thousands of years.

The listed parish church Igreja de São Lourenço was built in the 16th century.

With the territorial reform of 2013 , the independent municipality of Vilar de Cunhas was dissolved and merged with Gondiães .

Vilar de Cunhas was the seat of a parish of the same name Freguesia in the district ( concelho ) of Cabeceiras de Basto in the Braga district . The community had an area of ​​19.9 km² and 194 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

  • Vilar de Cunhas
  • Uz

As part of the territorial reform of September 29, 2013 , the municipalities of Vilar de Cunhas and Gondiães were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Gondiães e Vilar de Cunhas .

economy

Traditionally, livestock (cattle, goats) and agriculture (including maize) are important here. Viticulture is also practiced.

The community is badly affected by emigration. Since the 1960s in particular, people have emigrated from here to Central Europe, for example to France and Luxembourg.
