Gonzalo Carrasco Espinosa (born January 18, 1859 in Otumba , † January 19, 1936 in Puebla ) was a Mexican clergyman of the Societas Jesu and a religious painter.

biography

Carrasco was born to Vicente Carrasco and Ana Maria Espinosa in the state of México . He first attended the Colegio in his hometown and completed his artistic training from 1876 to 1883 at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes (ENBA), among others with Santiago Rebull . In the Museo del Prado in Madrid he studied the paintings of old masters. In 1884 he began training as a priest at the Jesuit Seminary in San Simon and held various academic and religious offices before the outbreak of the revolution . In 1895 he painted his first religious fresco in a church in Mexico City . When he was rector of the Colegios of Puebla, he and fellow priests were arrested by Carranza's men on August 8, 1914 . Due to his artistic talent, he was promised the position of director of the ENBA during his imprisonment, insofar as he would renounce religion. Although the execution was threatened as an alternative, Carrasco turned down this offer. Carranza was obviously so impressed by this attitude that he met Carrasco and had him portray him. He liked the result and exiled Carrasco instead of execution. After the unrest in Mexico, he returned and took over his offices again. He painted three other church frescoes in Saltillo (1918-1920; in San Juan Nepomuceno), in Mexico City (until 1924; in the Sagrada Familia Church) and Puebla (until 1931; in La Compañía). Most recently he was rector of the Colegio Católico del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús .
