history
The first years
On January 6, 1975, ABC became America's second broadcaster to start a breakfast television called AM America to fight the pre-existing breakfast television Today Show . AM America never brought the desired ratings, so they quickly looked for a replacement, they found it on a local station that broadcast its own breakfast television called The Morning Exchange . In contrast to the Today Show and AM America , the Morning Exchange only presented news in a light form, and only every hour on the hour, and the program was not broadcast from a news studio, but from a studio similar to a living room.
In November 1975 AM America was discontinued and replaced by Good Morning America with presenters David Hartman and Nancy Dussault.
1976–1998 growth phase, rise and fall
This show also struggled with poor ratings for a long time, but ratings rose in the 1970s and 1980s. The Today Show also struggled with extremely poor audience ratings during these years, especially after Barbara Walters ' decision to leave the Today Show . In the early 1980s the Today Show experienced severe personnel difficulties and audience ratings dropped dramatically. It was during these years that Good Morning America managed to take first place in the ratings for the first time. In 1987 long-time presenter David Hartman retired after more than 3,198 shows and was replaced by Charles Gibson. Good Morning America moderated Charles Gibson and Joan Lunden , they are considered to be the most popular moderation team to date and they also managed to permanently beat the Today Show in terms of audience ratings.
Good Morning America continued into the 1990s with excellent reviews and ratings. But in 1995 Good Morning America had to surrender first place to the Today Show after 16 years , which had a very strong new team of presenters in Katie Couric and Matt Lauer. On September 5, 1997, Lunden decided to leave the show after more than 17 years, she was replaced by Lisa McRee . The ratings rose again slightly until 1998 Charles Gibson left the show and was replaced by Kevin Newman. Much disagreed with the new moderator couple McRee and Newman, as a protest against the moderators, many viewers switched to the Today Show , whose audience ratings rose enormously.
1999-2006 Gibson & Sawyer & Roberts
In 1998, Good Morning America rose to number 3 in the ratings and was close to being canceled. In 1999 Lisa McRee and Kevin Newman were fired as presenters and replaced by Diane Sawyer and Charles Gibson, who returned to the show after a long hesitation. More and more people left the studio and held the broadcast in different locations, for example the broadcast came live from London on the 50th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's accession to the throne. In 2000, Good Morning America's audience increased by more than a million viewers, but it failed to overtake the Today Show . In 2004 they moved to a new modern studio in Times Square. On May 23, 2005, previous news presenter Robin Roberts was promoted to main presenter. On November 3rd, 2005 the show celebrated its 30th anniversary, all presenters were present on this show and one looked at the most beautiful moments of 30 years. In June 2006, Charles Gibson left Good Morning America after 19 years to host the ABC World News evening news , the ratings only dropped minimally.
2006-2009 Roberts & Sawyer
In early 2007, there were rumors that Diane Sawyer was leaving Good Morning America because she couldn't get her spot on the evening news. In 2006 Sam Champion and Chris Cuomo joined the show. In 2008 there were some significant changes: A new logo and studio, and from now on GMA was an abbreviation for Good Morning America .
