Goranci is an elongated mountain village at about 650 m in Bosnia and Herzegovina , northwest of Mostar .
population
The population was 81% Croatian until the Bosnian War ; 18% of the population belonged to the Serb minority. Bosniaks were not resident in the place. Most of the Serbian residents have been resettled in the Republika Srpska . At the 2013 census, the place still had 181 inhabitants.
In the center of the village there is a Catholic church with a cemetery and a Serbian Orthodox cemetery. There was never a Serbian Orthodox church in town.
The village of Goranci has become a victim of the rural exodus because the young people have moved to the city of Mostar, 13 km away, since the 1970s. Many of them built their houses in the hills of the Neretva Valley between the old town of Mostar and Goranci, so old neighbors from the village have remained neighbors in the suburbs as well. The districts that are mostly inhabited by people from Goranci are called Cim , Vihovići and Ilići.
A large number of the young villagers who could not find any or only poor work in Mostar in the 1970s moved to Germany (especially to Stuttgart, Munich, Rhine-Main, Rhine-Neckar and the Ruhr areas).
Some former villagers or their descendants are building weekend houses on their father's property to escape the summer heat in Mostar.
The former village school, which in the 1950s and 60s had over 30 students per year at times, is closed today. The few children go to school in Mostar.
While in 1962 there were still 2314 members registered in the Catholic parish of the Assumption, the number fell to 1,750 in 1975 and to 600 in 1992. In 2002 the parish had only 297 members.
Surname
The name is derived either from the Serbo-Croatian verb goriti ('to burn') or from the name of the neighboring village Raška Gora . Raška is from noun Rašak (, water chestnut 'or, water chestnut ') derived adjective ; gora means 'forest' or 'wooded mountain'. Goranci would therefore mean something like 'the forest dwellers' or 'the mountain dwellers'.
