Gordon Browne

Gordon Browne (born April 15, 1858 in Banstead , Surrey , † May 27, 1932 in Richmond upon Thames , London ) was a British illustrator .

life and work

Browne was the son of the painter and illustrator Hablot Knight Browne . Browne received his first artistic lessons from his father. Through his mediation, Browne was later able to study at the Heatherley School of Fine Art (London). He then became a student at South Kensington School . During his studies he was able to successfully debut as an artist and also had economic success.

Since the 1880s, Browne was considered one of the most important illustrators. His drawings appeared regularly in newspapers and magazines, and his illustrated books for children and young people found enthusiastic collectors during his lifetime. He illustrated books by Catherine Christian , Frederic Farrar , George Alfred Henty , Alfred Lang , LT Meade , Edith Nesbitt , Talbot Reed and many others.

For the majority of his works, Browne chose watercolor and pencil. He was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colors (RI) and the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA).

Gordon Browne died on May 27, 1932 at the age of 74 in Richmond and found his final resting place there.
