George Alfred Henty (born December 8, 1832 in Trumpington , Cambridgeshire , † November 16, 1902 in Weymouth , Dorset ) was an English writer and war correspondent. He is also occasionally quoted with GA Henty .

Live and act

Henty was the son of the stockbroker James Henty (1799–1872) and his wife Mary Bovill (1808–1887). He was the second of four children and was ill for long periods of time during his childhood and became an avid reader during this time. He completed his school years at Westminster School ( City of Westminster ) and then studied at Gonville and Caius College at the University of Cambridge .

When the Crimean War broke out in 1853 , Henty dropped out and got a job at the Army Hospital Commissariat . He was sent to the Crimea to report on the "working conditions" of British soldiers. His father sold his private letters home to the Morning Advertiser , who not only published them, but also offered Henty a lucrative contract as a war correspondent .

On July 1, 1857, Henty married Elizabeth Finucane († 1865 at Tbc ) in London and had four children with her: Maud Elizabeth, Ethel Mary, James and Charles Gerald. In 1859, Henty left the Army and began writing for the Evening Standard . He reported on the German War , where he had the opportunity to meet Giuseppe Garibaldi . He accompanied the army during a punitive expedition to the Abyssinian Empire and reported from the front of the Franco-German War . His experiences as a companion of English troops in the Ashanti Empire found the same enthusiastic readership as his reports from the Russo-Ottoman War .

In addition to his job, he also began to write literary works. In 1868 he made his successful debut as an author for young people with the novel “Out on the Pampas”. Encouraged by his success, Henty gave up his travels and published over a hundred works by the end of his life.

George Alfred Henty died on November 16, 1902 on his yacht "The Egret" in Weymouth Harbor and found his final resting place in Brompton Cemetery , London.
