Gori (actually Vello Agori , until 1935 Georg Tõnisson ; born February 20, 1894 in Pärnu , † October 7, 1944 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian caricaturist of the interwar period .

life and work

Gori graduated from high school in Pärnu in 1912. Since 1911 he has worked for the Estonian satirical newspapers Meie Mats , Kilk , Sarjaja and Sipelgas . From 1920 to 1938 he was chief cartoonist of the Meie Maa newspaper . From 1938 to 1940 worked for Rahvaleht . In 1928 he published a collection of his cartoons under the title Knock-out .

Gori rose to become the most famous Estonian caricaturist of his time due to his talent and his apt drawings. The Munich Simplicissimus was the main model for him . Gori's distinctive character types and his sometimes vicious portraits of politicians have become known. In his works, the entire Estonian social life between the First and Second World War is reflected. Gori denounced the insincerity, ignorance and parvenutism of parts of Estonian society. His caricatures often appeared in foreign newspapers.

During the Soviet (1940/41) and German occupation (1941-44) Estonia Gori remained active as a journalist. He first worked for the communist newspapers Rahva Hääl and Sirp ja Vasar , then for Eesti Sõna . With the second Soviet occupation of Estonia he was exposed to re-enactments by the KGB . Gori committed suicide in Tallinn in October 1944.
