Gorky 17 - The Dark Legacy , published in the US as Odium , is a turn-based strategy game in the style of X-Com or Jagged Alliance . The story, however, can best be compared with Resident Evil .

The game was originally developed for Windows and later implemented for MacOS and Linux . Twelve years after the first announcement, it was also released for AmigaOS in October 2015.

action

In November 2008, NATO reports that the Russians razed one of their former training camps for spies and agents, Gorky 17, to the ground. You downplay the incident and think that you intended to do this anyway. When a year later, when Poland was incorporated into NATO, a similar facility was found, the investigation began. A laboratory is also discovered here (one also suspected to be in Gorky 17) in which military experiments were carried out. Soon after, the scouting party is attacked by creatures and contact is broken off. This event penetrates the public and one begins to seal off the place. A three-person NATO special team is deployed to conduct further investigations.

Gameplay

Overview map

In the game, the player takes command of the above-mentioned NATO team. The Canadian Cole Sullivan (leader of the small squad), the Pole Jarek Owicz and the French Thiery Trantigne form the core team and always remain playable, unless one dies - then the game is over. In the course of the game, the player comes across other characters who join the group temporarily.

The game is played first on a pre-rendered map, which shows the surroundings in great detail. Here, the three-dimensionally modeled figures can interact with parts of the environment such as doors, ladders, switches, etc., or they can open chests and other containers to get new items such as weapons, ammunition or bandages. There are a large number of different melee and ranged weapons in the game - from baseball bats to experimental ion cannons - and a wide variety of bandages with various effects.

If you approach certain points on the overview map, the game switches to combat mode. The opponents are mostly not visible on the map, be it boss fights or special situations. The opponents are always in the same places, so that the surprise effect is lost when you play again. The battle mode takes place on a 3D version of the overview map, which has been enlarged (with the same scale of the figures) and does not appear quite as detailed. In addition, there is only ever a certain area of battle. The battles are turn-based, with the player and the AI taking turns dragging all members of their group. The surroundings of the combat areas sometimes look a little different than on the overview map. If, for example, an empty street can be seen there, it can happen that the areas are filled with (petrol) barrels, wooden boxes or the like during the battles. You rarely find boxes that contain objects (they look like the overview map, but are not noted there).

Struggles

The fights are varied. For example, boss fights, which often occur in the game, are always initiated with a render film that puts the boss monster in the limelight. In combat itself you can proceed in a variety of ways: You can shoot gasoline barrels to damage enemies in a certain area, or you can use found super weapons, which can often only be used once or only rarely found. These then have a large radius of action and especially simplify boss fights. The player must proceed according to the situation, because some monsters are immune to certain weapons or hardly take any damage. The interaction of the characters is also important: A soldier A can throw a gasoline or vodka bottle at a creature, which does less damage. Soldier B, who has to stand right next to the enemy, can now use matches and light the affected creature, which then starts to burn. It now takes damage over a number of rounds, which in turn simplifies some fights. If it takes too long to confront, new opponents can enter the battlefield and prolong the battle.

Character values

During battles, characters can use weapons to improve their dealings with others. You will then go up in the level (from 0 to 10) of this weapon. The character now causes more damage with the weapon and hits more often at greater distances. The health value is the second character value and can be improved with remedies. There is no armor value per se, but you can reduce the damage caused by enemies by equipping vests.
