The Gornerbach is an 8.3 kilometers long left tributary of the Reuss in the municipality of Gurtnellen in the Swiss canton of Uri .

course

The stream rises in the west of the municipality of Gurtnellen am Bächenfirn below the Bächenstöckli . The valley of the mountain range from streams floor framed in the west over the Zwächten and Schneehüenderstock in the northwest to the Krönten in the Northeast and the Sass-floor in the east. At the end of the valley there are several small glacier areas, including the Sassfirn and the Tierälpli, whose meltwater streams flow into the Gornerbach in addition to the Sass-Seeli . The rocky slope on the west side below the Bächenfirn bears the name Bäch because there several parallel channels direct the water into the valley.

In the lower valley area, the Gornerbach no longer receives any noteworthy tributaries. The alpine settlements of Rinderboden, Rosti, Rüepenstafel and Grueben lie on its course. In the last section, the river falls steeply through a gorge to the valley floor near Wiler. Two footbridges cross the gorge near the Brandegg above the Stäumenkapelle and allow access to the Dreistäubenfall, a waterfall in the Gornerbach.

Hydropower

In 1885 Granitwerke Gurtnellen AG built the Stäubenwald small power plant on the lower reaches of the Gornerbach , the first hydroelectric power plant built in the canton of Uri. This plant was shut down in 1910 after the concession had meanwhile passed to the Elektrochemische Fabrik Gurtnellen AG and from there to the Altdorf electricity company.

At Grueben, part of the water is captured and fed in a tunnel and a pressure pipe with a 585 meter gradient to the Gurtnellen power station near Wiler on the Reuss, which was built in 1900.

Before the Gornerbach joins the Reuss, the Gotthard Railway crosses the creek on the Gornerbach Bridge .
