Gotham is a place in Nottinghamshire in England about seven kilometers south of Nottingham .

history

St. Lawrence Church dates from the 12th century. The name is derived from the Old English word for " goat home " ( New English goat home ).

The land east of the village was originally a floodplain. Agriculture, basketry and later weaving were the main occupations. The land is now being drained into the nearby Fairham Brook , a tributary of the River Trent , to allow potatoes and sugar beets to thrive on the alluvial soil . The land is worked by seven farmers in the village. (As of 2020) The surrounding hills have been used for gypsum mining since the early 20th century . At their peak, the three mine shafts produced around 160,000 tons of building material and gave the local population a regular livelihood. The last mine closed in 1994 when the gypsum deposits were depleted.

The Gotham Memorial Hall , used for community events such as theater, shows and private parties, was built in 1921.

Local legend

The place is the English equivalent of Schilda in the stories of the " Wise Men of Gotham " . It is said to be mentioned as Gotyam in a 13th century manuscript . The residents of Gotham should u. a. built a fence around a cuckoo to lock it in and thus deceive royal scouts of their sanity.

The settlement is also known for a nursery rhyme:

Three wise men of Gotham
They went to sea in a bowl
And if the bowl had been stronger
My song would have been longer.
