Gottesgraben is the name of an originally canalised diversion of the village stream in the municipality of Wettingen in the Swiss canton of Aargau , which was dug in the 16th century by the monks of the Wettingen monastery . Originally the Dorfbach flowed into the Limmat at the Landvogteischloss Baden , after the diversion around 300 meters below the monastery. The diversion was used to irrigate the fields.
In the centuries that followed, responsibilities for the maintenance of the stream were divided between the community and the monastery; The latter had to maintain the God's moat, while the rest of the village stream was the responsibility of the community. In 1994 and 1995, parts of the God's moat were renatured.
