Gottfried August Arndt (born November 24, 1748 in Breslau ; † October 10, 1819 in Leipzig ) was a German historian, ethnologist and political scientist.

Life

Arndt received training at the Berge monastery school . After he started studying at the University of Halle , he moved to the University of Leipzig in 1770 . Here he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophical sciences on February 17, 1773, and completed his habilitation in the same year with the permission to hold lectures at universities as a master's degree.

At the same time he had secured his living as a private teacher and was able to complete an educational trip to Wetzlar , Vienna and Regensburg in 1777 . There he dealt with the history of the imperial house, specifically the expired Wilhelmine line of the house of Bavaria, according to his inclination. After returning to Leipzig in 1780, he became an associate professor of philosophy. In 1791 he was given the full professorship of ethics and politics and in 1809 he became professor of political and police science. In addition, he had become Decemvir at the Leipzig University in 1811.

Arndt also took part in the organizational tasks of the Leipzig University. He was dean of the philosophical faculty several times and was rector of the alma mater in the winter semesters 1794, 1800, 1804 . It has remained interesting mainly because of its historical research, which still has a lot of potential today. A list of the library he had established at the time appeared in print in 1822.
