Gottfried II. (Gâtinais)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gottfried II. Ferréol (French: Geoffroy Ferréol ; † April 30, 1042/45) was a count of Gâtinais in the 11th century. As the great-grandfather in the direct male line of Count Gottfried Plantagenet von Anjou , he is one of the ancestors of the English royal family Plantagenet , but himself he probably came from the House of Châteaudun .

Gottfried Ferréol was a son of Hugo von Le Perche and Beatrix von Mâcon, a younger brother was named Liétald. This genealogical background can be found in a document from Bishop Franco of Paris from 1028. This source provides information about his further family circumstances. His mother's first marriage was to Count Gottfried I von Gâtinais , whose son was Count Aubry von Gâtinais , who was succeeded by Gottfried Ferréol as his half-brother. His father, Hugo von Le Perche ( Hugonis Pertice ), was probably identical with the son of Count Fulcois von Mortagne from the Châteaudun family, who is named in a document from the Abbey of Saint-Vincent of Le Mans from 1061. Count Aubry von Câtinais died between 1028 and 1030, whereupon Gottfried Ferréol succeeded him. Any official acts of him are not known.

Gottfried Ferréol was married to Ermengarde von Anjou , a daughter of Count Fulko III. Nerra of Anjou . His sons derived their claim to the important county of Anjou through them .

A possible daughter, to whom the name Hildegarde was added in later sources, was married to Joscelin von Courtenay ( House Courtenay ).

Gottfried Ferréol died on April 30th, according to a deed of gift from his eldest son. The year Gottfried died can only be narrowed down vaguely, but his second son could have been born posthumously in 1042/43. His second wife married Duke Robert I of Burgundy around 1047 .
