Gottfried III. (Reichenbach)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gottfried III. von Reichenbach (* around 1210; † after September 9, 1279) was the last male representative of the Reichenbach branch of the Counts of Reichenbach . The Ziegenhain branch existed in the male line until 1450.

Gottfried was the third son of Count Heinrich III. von Reichenbach († 1250) and his wife Bertha von Bilstein . His father entered the Teutonic Order in 1219, renouncing his worldly property, together with Gottfried's brother Heinrich IV, and left the county of Reichenbach to his son Wigger. At that time, Gottfried was still a student (Godefrido scolare). He was dissatisfied with the inheritance left to him and led numerous feuds with his brother Wigger and with Count Wittekind (Widekind) von Bilstein, his mother Bertha’s brother, over what he believed to be property. He was therefore often in dispute with his Ziegenhain relatives, especially with the provost Burkhart of the Fritzlar Petristift , who defended the interests of Archbishop Siegfried III of Mainz . von Eppstein represented in northern Hesse and the Eichsfeld (and in 1247 became Archbishop of Salzburg). He also argued with the Teutonic Order about property until 1243, which father and brother allegedly did not approve of the transfer of ownership.

In 1229 he was captured for the first time by his brother Wigger and uncle Widekind, but was then able to escape to the Reichenbach settlement of the Teutonic Order . In 1236 he fell into the hands of his enemies, who obliged him to pay a high ransom and then brought him to Mainz , because of his stance loyal to the Hohenstaufen region; he was now also an opponent of the Archbishop of Mainz, Siegfried . there he had to submit to the archbishop and cede his house in Ziegenhain to him and swear primal feud to his Ziegenhain relatives . He was not released until 1237.

In 1250 he was forced to hand over all of his fiefs to his relative and enemy Berthold I von Ziegenhain, for which Berthold advanced a sum of money to him. There was another dispute about it, but in 1257 Gottfried felt compelled to confirm this fief transfer. This agreement was on August 6, 1258 by Gottfried III. after Berthold's death confirmed again for Berthold's widow Eilika, her sons Gottfried V. and Berthold and their descendants.

Gottfried made numerous donations to the Haina Monastery , which was founded by his ancestors, in 1236 even his and his wife's entire property. He confirmed this donation again in 1241. On the other hand, he also disputed goods, income and other possessions from the monastery which, in his opinion, it had wrongly received from relatives, vassals or ministerials .

Gottfried was married to Mechthild von Abenberg at the latest in 1236 . The marriage was probably childless. With his wife's inheritance, he acquired a retirement home in Würzburg , where he lived from 1277. Towards the end of his life he seems to have had a benefice as canon . With Gottfried's death in Hernst 1279, according to the settlement concluded in 1233 between Berthold I von Ziegenhain and the Ludowinger Konrad von Thuringia , with all real estate and accessories there finally fell to the Hessian Landgrave Heinrich I.
