Gottfried Jacob Jänisch (medic, 1707)
Gottfried Jacob Jänisch (born June 14, 1707 in Hamburg ; † March 28, 1781 in Hamburg) was a German doctor and Freemason during the Enlightenment .

Gottfried Jacob Jänisch was a son of the doctor Ephraim Jänisch, who came from Silesia . He was a student of the Johanneum and attended the academic high school . He studied at the University of Helmstedt , where he received his doctorate in medicine on May 25, 1734, with the book On the Use of Steam Baths and Smoking in Curing Diseases under Brandan Meibom . After his studies he returned to Hamburg and was soon considered one of the most recognized doctors in the city. On June 19, 1748 he married a daughter of the Hamburg Senator Rudolph Berenberg (1715–1764), with whom he had five sons and one daughter. A son of the same name Gottfried Jacob Jänisch also became a doctor in Hamburg, as did his son Cornelius.
He was admitted to the Freemasons' union on December 18, 1743. After Matthias Albert Luttman withdrew , he was elected Provincial Grand Master on May 22, 1760 .
His extensive library comprised 32,000 volumes, which after his death were divided into seven categories from 1782 to 1787.
In addition, he had a natural history cabinet , consisting of snails , mussels , corals , stuffed birds and fish and numerous fossils . This also included an electrifying machine , air pumps, a materia medica and numerous collection cupboards. These items were auctioned at the beginning of 1784 by the broker Peter Texier.
