Gottfried Krauß (born February 26, 1936 in Johanngeorgenstadt ; † October 7, 2017 in Eibenstock ) was a German carpenter and wood carver from the Saxon Ore Mountains , who was known for the artistic quality of his carving work.

Life

Gottfried Krauß was born in 1936 in the property at Wiesenweg 1 (until 1920 Jugelstraße 14) in the Jugel district of the town of Johanngeorgenstadt in the Ore Mountains, which was incorporated one year earlier . His parents' house burned down completely in 1928 due to a short circuit on the electrical line and was rebuilt that same year. His ancestors, who were among the Bohemian exiles , had lived there since the 17th century. From 1942 to 1950 he attended elementary school in Jugel. He later completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter and passed the master's examination. He worked as a carpenter for decades in the state-owned company in Johanngeorgenstadt. In his spare time he devoted himself to the art of carving at an early age. In 1962 he joined the local wood carving association, where he soon distinguished himself with artistically valuable work. In 1979 he took over the office of chairman of the Johanngeorgenstadt wood carving association, which he held until 1992. In this function he devoted himself particularly intensively to youth work and the promotion of young woodcarvers. Even at an advanced age, he still took part in public carving.

In 1994 he stood for the Free Voting Community for the city council election in Johanngeorgenstadt.

Exhibitions

After the city of Johanngeorgenstadt had already honored the life's work of the old master carver in December 2012 with a special exhibition, Gottfried Krauss announced in February 2017 that he was donating most of his own works and his collection of Ore Mountain carving art to the Eibenstock Embroidery Museum for permanent exhibition purposes Will provide. Therefore, from April 2017, the museum had an earlier apartment in the Bürgermeister-Hesse-Straße building converted for museum purposes. The aim is to open the permanent exhibition Folk Art Carving there in Advent 2017 . Two rooms and a carving workshop behind glass have been dedicated to Gottfried Krauss in the Eibenstock Embroidery Museum since May 2018.
