history

Color mill in Jugel

The establishment of the place goes back to mining in the 16th century. The Fünf-Brüder-Stolln , muted in 1813, was soon closed.

In 1561 the name “an der Gugell” was documented. In 1571 Sebastian Preißler built a glassworks with eight houses in what would later become Oberjugel , in which pane glass, glasses and tankards were made for the court of Electoral Saxony in Dresden. The glassworks closed at the beginning of the 18th century.

The houses of Henneberg with an excursion restaurant not far from the Kleiner Kranichsee (928 m), a raised bog that is under nature protection, also belong to Oberjugel .

In Unterjugel, a board mill and a paint mill by Johann Gabriel Löbels , Preissler's grandson, were operated using the water power of the Jugelbach to produce cobalt blue. Löbel's mill, the Unterjugel blue color works , became the property of the Saxon Elector Johann Georg II in 1668 and was merged with the Oberschlema blue color works in 1677 . Today the former Gasthof Farbmühle is located on the presumably former location .

In 1935 Jugel was incorporated into Johanngeorgenstadt together with Wittigsthal .
