Gottfried Polysius (born November 27, 1827 in Dessau ; † April 21, 1886 there ; full name: Andreas Ernst Gottfried Polysius ) was a German master locksmith and company founder .

Gottfried Polysius was born as the only son of Gottfried Polysius and his wife Louise Polysius. Sturm born in Dessau. His father was the administrator of the ducal sheep farm in Dessau. He married Louise Amelang, daughter of the timber merchant and musician Gottfried Amelang and Leopoldine Amelang nee. Schmidt. With her he had two sons: Otto Polysius (1863-1933) and Max Polysius (1870-1932).

Life

Polysius first attended the ducal high school in Dessau. He realized that the emerging industrialization could bring him opportunities and learned the locksmith trade. The apprenticeship years led him u. a. to Switzerland , London and Paris . At Easter 1859 he, now a master locksmith, opened a workshop with an apprentice in Dessau and thus laid the foundation stone for what would later become the company, G. Polysius AG . Gottfried Polysius initially produced safes .

On May 23, 1870, he founded the G. Polysius iron foundry and machine factory , which established itself in the then still young building materials industry with self-constructed and powerful mills . Production started with 32 workers. Göpel and vibrating sieves were built next to safes . In 1875 the company supplied the wrought iron gates for the ducal palace in Dessau . The common love for music and theater led to a friendship with his sovereign, Duke Friedrich I. von Anhalt . Besides the Duke, he was the only one who was allowed to tap at rehearsals in the theater.

From 1876 the production of threshing machines , sawmills and steam engines began . In addition to these agricultural machines, Polysius also produced flour mills , brewery and distillery equipment . In addition, Gottfried Polysius acquired a patent for an upsetting and welding machine. He was particularly involved in the emerging beet sugar industry .

On April 29, 1883, Polysius was appointed to the commission . Gottfried Polysius died of a heart attack on April 21, 1886 during a Tannhäuser performance in his beloved Dessau court theater .
