The son of the court secretary Johann Sand (* October 10, 1606 - July 18, 1654) and his first wife Anna (* December 12, 1616 - August 21, 1651), daughter of the vice-mayor of Kneiphof Gottfried Winnenpfennig and widow of the businessman Klemens Stoltzenberg, was orphaned in childhood. Then he completed a gentleman's journey that took him through Italy, France and England. After returning home, he is said to have become associate professor of medicine in 1682, full fourth professor of medicine in 1700, third professor in 1705 and first professor in the medical faculty at the University of Königsberg in 1707. In that capacity he also took part in the organizational tasks of the Königsberg University and was Vice-Rector of the Alma Mater in the winter semester 1707/08 .
