Gottfried VI. (Anjou)

Gottfried VI. (French: Geoffroy , English: Geoffrey ; * June 1, 1134 in Rouen ; † July 26, 1158 in Nantes ) was a Hereditary Count of Anjou , Maine and Count of Nantes from the House of Plantagenet . He was the second son of Count Gottfried V. Plantagenet of Anjou († 1151) and his wife Mathilde of England († 1167).

According to his father's will, Gottfried should inherit the counties of Anjou and Maine. But his older and more powerful brother Heinrich withheld this from him after the inheritance occurred. As a result, Gottfried allied himself with King Louis VII of France in 1152 and attacked his brother. Gottfried tried unsuccessfully to kidnap the king's divorced wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine , France's richest heiress and lover of his brother, on her way to Poitiers . In 1156 he revolted again unsuccessfully against his brother and lost his castles Chinon , Loudun and Mirabeau . With the support of his brother, Gottfried took possession of the county of Nantes in 1157 , where she gave Count Hoël III. had expelled.

Gottfried died childless in 1158, his county was taken over by Heinrich, who later transferred it to his son, Duke Gottfried II of Brittany .
