Gottfried Vanoni

Gottfried Vanoni SVD (born March 30, 1948 in Chur ; † April 25, 2006 in Maria Enzersdorf , Austria ) was a Swiss Roman Catholic theologian and author .

Life

Gottfried Vanoni grew up with his five siblings in Bad Ragaz , Switzerland. In 1969 he completed his Matura at the Einsiedeln Abbey School and soon after joined the Society of the Divine Word . From 1970 to 1976 he studied theology at the Philosophical-Theological University of St. Gabriel and completed his studies with a thesis on the book of Jona . Vanoni was ordained a priest on May 15, 1976 . In the following year he began a doctorate at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with a focus on exegesis and Bible theology and completed this in 1983 with a thesis on literary criticism and grammar .

Vanoni taught the Old Testament in St. Gabriel from 1983 and worked there from 1986 to 1995 and again from 2001 as dean and vice-rector in the last years of his life. From 1988 he also taught as a visiting professor at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna . From 1989 he taught Hebrew and the Old Testament at the Heiligenkreuz University of Applied Sciences .

As a speaker, author, composer and chairman of the "Working Group of German-Speaking Catholic Old Testament Scholars" (AGAT), he was involved in many different ways right into his old age. He died of a brain tumor in the St. Gabriel Mission House .
