Gotthard Bülau

Gotthard Bülau (born February 27, 1835 in Hamburg ; † October 20, 1900 there ) was a German internist .

Gotthard Bülau was the son of the doctor Gustav Bülau (1799–1857). From 1854 he studied in Heidelberg and Göttingen , where he completed his doctoral thesis in 1858. In the fall of 1858 he became an assistant doctor at the St. Georg General Hospital in Hamburg for three years . In early 1867 he represented the sick Georg Karl Franz Tuengel (1816–1873), whose successor he was in 1869 as chief physician of one of the four newly established internal departments. In 1886 he gave up this position because his private practice was busy.

Services

The description of the thoracic drainage in empyema of the pleural cavity was a groundbreaking achievement - this procedure is therefore named after him: Bülau drainage .
