Gotthard Hilzinger (* May 12, 1718 (baptism date) in Geißlingen , † September 12, 1781 in Waldshut ) was a Southwest German church painter of the Rococo .

Life

Gotthard Hilzinger came from Geißlingen, today part of the municipality of Klettgau . Few indirect information is known about his education and career. In 1749 he was interrogated in Waldshut as a witness in a building law matter during the construction of the rectory. In the naturalization protocol of the city of Waldshut of June 11th, 1762 it is noted: "... gotthardt hilzinger from gißlingen born profesion a painter who was taught and respectively raised there, and has been on the Frembde for several years ...". After Konrad Sutter, the son of a farmer from Geißlingen grew up in Waldshut from 1730 and completed his training as a painter here too. Even if there is no evidence, Hilzinger is regarded, due to stylistic similarities, as a student of Franz Joseph Spiegler , who carried out several larger commissions in the Upper Rhine region and northern Switzerland from the mid-twenties to the mid-fifties. Gotthard Hilzinger settled permanently in Waldshut in the 1940s, where he bought the house and property. In June 1762 Hilzinger was accepted into the citizenry. From 1765 to 1770 Hilzinger owned the Haus zum Strauss and from 1770 to 1778 half of the Haus zum Affen. Hilzinger got involved in debts and lawsuits at the end of the 1960s and lived in simple accommodation on Waldshuter Rheinstrasse until his death in 1781.

family

Gotthard Hilzinger married Maria Anna Hetzel on February 17, 1763, the daughter of the lieutenant governor Franz Ignaz Hetzel. Of the six children, four died in infancy. One remaining son and daughter died young at the age of 24 and 22 respectively. Maria Anna Hilzinger survived the man by 23 years.

Artistic activity

Hilzinger worked mainly in the southern Black Forest and northern Switzerland as a fresco and altarpiece painter. The first portrait commissions have been guaranteed since 1756. Some portraits of his friends and clients have survived. Hilzinger shows original features, especially in his late work and portraits, but remains clearly behind Spiegler's work. Hilzinger received comparatively modest fees. His fee for painting the church in Miseln was about a third of the cost estimate of a competitor Brechin from Rheinfelden. Under the burden of debt, he carried out profane painting and decorating work in recent years.
