Gottlieb Bode

Gottlieb Bode (born February 21, 1863 in Hornhausen ; † January 20, 1937 in Berlin-Spandau ) was a German businessman, art collector and patron .

life and career

Gottlieb Bode was born as the youngest son of the farmer Heinrich Bode. He was trained as a merchant. After gaining experience in international companies, he started his own business. His business ventures extended beyond Germany and took him to the Russian court of the Tsars in St. Petersburg . It was through these trips that his later very extensive collections began. He began with the collection of all silver coins of the respective German sovereigns at that time . With the exception of one coin, all of the coins struck from the imperial era were completely present in his collection. Later his lively spirit found new activity in the works of fine art. The wholesaler supported artists who broke new ground in painting, such as expressionism and impressionism . He recognized the genius of these painters early on. He succeeded in turning numerous business friends into enthusiastic friends of contemporary art. In this way, Gottlieb Bode himself came into possession of an extensive collection. a. Works by Camille Corot , Emil Nolde and several other "Brücke painters" included. Much of the collection was bombed during World War II . The father gave his sons Erich and Georg the same undivided joy in collecting art as a good inheritance on their way into life. You continued your father's patronage and were able to continue the collections.
