The museum building

The Goulandris Museum for Contemporary Art of the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation ( Greek Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης του Ιδρύματος Βασίλη & Ελίζας Γουλανδρή ) in Athens houses works of art from different epochs on several floors. The construction of the museum began in August 2012, the completion took place in October 2018. On October 1, 2019 the opening took place by the Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos .

location

The museum is located in downtown Athens around 800 m southeast of Syntagma Square at Odos Eratosthenous 13 ( Οδός Ερατοσθένους 13 ).

building

The building has 11 floors, 6 of them above ground and 5 below ground. There are 7 floors accessible to visitors, 3 of which are underground. The architectural design was the responsibility of I. & A. Vikelas and Partners. The total area is 7250 m²; 1654 m² of this is available to the museum, of which 1124 m² for permanent and 530 m² for temporary exhibitions. The museum extends over five floors. The reception area and the museum shop are on the ground floor. Here the visitor receives an audio device free of charge that explains the background of some of the works of art. A mezzanine houses a café-restaurant.

First floor: classics of modern art, decorative art

In the main hall, works of art by Cézanne , Degas , Gauguin , Monet , Picasso , Rodin and Van Gogh are exhibited. In the adjoining room you will find Chinese porcelain, glass art, French furniture and decor. A horse made of porcelain from the Tang Dynasty , a Chinese burial object from the 8th century, deserves special mention .

Second floor: "Views of the 20th century"

Drawings and paintings on paper can be seen in the adjoining room. Works from the post-war period and contemporary art are exhibited in the hall. The artists include Bacon , Balthus , de Chirico , Derain , Giacometti , Hundertwasser , Lichtenstein , Modigliani , Picasso and Pollock . Films about artists, their lives and their works are shown in a small projection room.

Third floor: international and modern Greek art

Large format pictures by the artists Kiefer , Ruscha and Takis are exhibited in a separate room. In the hall you can find works by Hadjikyriakos-Ghika , Moralis , Parthenis , Tetsis and others.

Fourth floor: contemporary Greek art

Works of art by Fassianos , Karella , Rorris , Sorogas , Vari and other artists give an overview of the artistic creation of the last decades in Greece.

Basement

In the first basement is the area that can be used for changing exhibitions of specific artists or themes. In the second basement there is a library that houses around 6000 books on the subject of art. They can be borrowed for a short time and read in a reading zone. The auditorium with around 190 seats is located on the 3rd basement floor.
