Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika ( Greek Νίκος Χατζηκυριάκος Γκίκας Nikos Chatzikyriakos Gikas , born February 26, 1906 in Athens ; † September 3, 1994 ibid) was a Greek , Cubist painter .

life and work

Nikos Ghika moved to Paris in 1923 and studied at the Sorbonne . A few months after arriving in Paris, he took part in an exhibition at the Salon des Indépendants . In 1924 he continued his studies of painting and etching at the Académie Ranson . His first solo exhibition took place in 1927 in the Percier Gallery . It was presented by Maurice Raynal . Ghika was on friendly terms with Hans Arp and Jean Hélion , with whom he exhibited together in 1934. In 1961 he married Barbara Warner (1911–1989). In 1973 he became a member of the Academy of Athens and in 1989 a member of theRoyal Academy of Arts . He was a member of the Accademia Tiberina and was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres .

Ghika did not only paint, but also made sculptures, etchings , illustrations and wrote essays . He was a founding member of AICA-Hellas, the Greek section of the Association Internationale des Critiques d'Art .
