Govan Old Parish Church
The Govan Old Parish Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish city of Glasgow . In 1966 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.
history
Christians have been using the site for centuries. This is also indicated by the Celtic crosses and hogbacks in the surrounding churchyard. The oldest were created around the year 900.
In 1876, John Burnet submitted a design to modernize the previous structure at the same location. However, this was not implemented. Robert Rowand Anderson submitted a draft to expand the existing structure, but it was also rejected. Instead, it was decided in 1882 to build a new church, the sixth at this location, based on a design by Anderson. This was implemented by 1884. In 1912, Anderson was entrusted with expanding the choir . After 1940 the structure was revised.
description
The building stands off Govan Road in the southern Govan district of Glasgow on the left bank of the Clyde . The cruciform church is designed in neo-Gothic style. A bell tower was planned and a foundation was created on the west side, but the tower was never built. The pointed arched entrance portal on the southern gable side is designed as an archivolt in relief . The flanking pointed arched recesses have tracery with pillars on the trunk . Three high lancet windows run along the gable above the portal. With the exception of the blind three passes and the gable cross, the facade is unadorned. Massive buttresses flank the portal.
Six lancet windows are arranged along the nave. Buttresses divide the facade vertically. The transept is designed with two gables. Each shows three blind lancet windows and a rose window . The final roofs are covered with slate.
