The Gowan River , called Te Kauparenui in Māori , is a river in the Tasman District on the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The Gowan River rises from Lake Rotoroa , which is mainly fed by the two rivers D'Urville River and Sabine River . From the lake, the river flows directly north to flow into the Buller River after 12 km just under 1 km east of the Gowan Bridge .

On the outflow path of Lake Rotoroa is the small settlement of Rotoroa , to which a road leads upstream along the river.

economy

Agriculture and forestry are practiced on both sides of the river.

Flora and fauna

Trout are plentiful in the river and are believed to be difficult to fish because of the river's conditions. The upper reaches of the river contain the highest population of trout of any river in New Zealand.

Protection of the river

In 2001 the river along with the Buller River was placed under protection due to its natural state by a Water Conservation Order ( Water Conservation (Buller River) Order 2001 ). The Majac Trust requested an amendment to the order that would allow the construction of a hydropower plant. However, this motion was denied by the Environment Court in August 2007.
