The Gräfensteinhütte is a refuge in the Palatinate Forest managed by the Merzalben local association of the Palatinate Forest Association . It is located in the district of Merzalben about 500 m southeast of the development boundary of the place in Hafertal, a side valley of the Merzalbe river . The hut is at an altitude of 296 m . It does not offer any overnight accommodation. The name "Gräfensteinhütte" is derived from the nearby Gräfenstein castle ruins .
history
The Merzalben local association, founded in 1952, built its first hut in 1973/74. In the following years, the hut was expanded in 1980, a patio was created in 1982, the public sewer system was connected in 1993 and the kitchen was modernized in 1999. In September 2005 the hut was broken into twice, the second time being arson. The hut burned down to the ground. After that, today's modern hut was built in 2006/2007. The coat of arms stone in front of the hut was created in 1979 by the stonemason Artz from Herschberg .
Access and walks
There is a parking lot for hikers at the hut, which can be easily reached via the K52 district road that branches off from the L496 state road that runs through Merzalben. Nearby hiking destinations are the Vordere Winschertkopf with a sandstone cliff in the summit area, the castle ruins of Gräfenstein, and the Wieslautertal to Hinterweidenthal . The neighboring huts of the Palatinate Forest Association are the Hilschberghaus in Rodalben and the Hollertal Hut in the Schwarzbachtal .
