Surname

The name "Merzalbe" means "Bach des Mericho" and is traced back to a Franconian settler who must have settled long before the first documented mention of the place of the same name on the brook long before 1237. In the certificate, Count Friedrich III. von Leiningen awarded the " Castrum Grebinstein " with the villages " Merichisalbin ", " Rothalbin " and " Eiswilre ".

The Merzalbe rises in the middle of the Palatinate Forest in the central part of the Frankenweide mountain range west of the Palatinate main watershed on the line connecting the Weißenberg and the Eschkopf at a height of almost 500  m . The source is contained in the Christel fountain . On its way to the southwest, the Merzalbe flows through the valley below the local community of Leimen and then through Merzalben . After 12 km run leads them in Riegelbrunnerhof , too Münchweiler belonging hamlet , from the right in the Rodalb. The water of the Merzalbe finally reaches the Rhine via Schwarzbach , Blies , Saar and Mosel .
