The Gräwig , formerly also Gräficht , is a forest area in the municipality of Ilsede , Peine district in Lower Saxony . The 145 hectare area is located in the Klein Ilsede district and borders the Pisserbach in the Dungelbeck field to the east , a district of the town of Peine .
The name is derived from the Low German "graw" = grave. The name Gräwig or Gräficht has no relation to the "counts" family von Schwicheldt , to whose previous possession the area belonged. A barrow field and another prehistoric grave monument, the so-called stone box, come from the younger Bronze Age (10th to 8th centuries BC) west of the Pisserbach in Gräwig .
The Gräwig was bought in 1964 by the parish of Dungelbeck, which gave the parish to the Peine district for the construction of the district hospital, which began operations in November 1971.
Gräwig has been a landscape protection area since 1978 .
