Green meadow made of blue curacao, orange juice and sparkling wine

Green meadow (also Green Widow , Green Frog or Green Angel ) is a cocktail that was popular as a party cocktail in the 1980s, especially in the GDR . The simple long drink consists of a mixture of blue curacao and orange juice , which gives it its green color, and is usually topped up with sparkling wine , garnished with a fruit skewer or an orange slice and served with a plastic drinking straw .

Ingredients and preparation

The basic version of the Green Meadow is made from a mixture of Blue Curacao , a blue colored orange liqueur , and orange juice . The mixing ratio can vary and is mainly dependent on other ingredients. In recipes, for example, 4  cl Blue Curaçao are served with 12 cl orange juice on ice cubes or 2 cl Blue Curaçao and orange juice are mixed and topped up with 6 cl sparkling wine. Classic dry sparkling wine from the Rotkäppchen brand, popular in the GDR, is used.

The green color of the cocktail is important, which is the result of a mixed color of blue curacao and orange juice. If the blue liqueur is carefully added to the glass at the very end, it sinks to the bottom and you get a color gradient from yellow to green to blue before stirring. In addition to the standard recipes , there are also variants with additional ingredients, such as banana liqueur , banana juice or vodka .

meaning

The green meadow was popular under numerous names, especially in the 1980s, as a party and bar cocktail in the GDR and is still one of the best-known typical GDR cocktails. At first there were difficulties with the Blue Curaçao, since in the GDR only toxic liquids were allowed to be labeled with blue color. In addition, Curaçao liqueur was produced under license in the GDR , so that it was only available in Intershop or in delicatessen shops . A Blue Curaçao with 30% vol. Was used as a delicacy product of the “Zahnaer Edellikör” brand . from the VEB Liqueur Factory Zahna (VEB Beverage Combine Dessau). Despite its high price of 28  marks, this should not have colored as well as the product from the Intershop.
