The green anthias ( Pseudanthias huchtii ), also called Hucht's anthias , is a species of marine fish found in the tropical Pacific from the Indonesian island group of Moluccas and the Philippines in the west to Palau and Vanuatu in the east and south to the Great Barrier Reef .
features
In contrast to most of the other anthias, which are predominantly colored in red tones, the green anthill has a greenish basic color. Males are greenish to olive in color and reach a body length of 12 cm, females are yellow-green in color and are only half the size at 6 cm. The third dorsal fin ray of the male is noticeably elongated. The males' ventral fins are red. A red longitudinal ligament that extends from the rear edge of the eyes to behind the base of the pectoral fin is red in the males and yellow in the females.
- Fin formula : dorsal X / 17, anal III / 7.
Way of life
The green anthias live individually, in harem groups with a male and numerous females or in large schools on rocky and coral reefs, especially on the outer reefs, in water depths of 3 to 30 meters and feed on plankton.
Research history
The green anthias was first described by Bleeker in 1857 in the " Acta Societatis Scientiarum Indo-Neerlandicae " as Anthias huchtii . For Artzusatz huchtii he noted: " I call this kind in honor of Mr. GJL Van der Hucht in Batavia , owner of a beautiful collection of Moluccan fish he handed me with great selflessness to describe. "
In his work " Atlas ichthyologique des Indies Orientales Néèlandaises ", Bleeker created the genus Pseudanthias in 1871 for 6 Pacific anthias that were previously assigned to the genera Anthias and Serranus , including Pseudanthias huchtii . Boulenger (1895) saw Pseudanthias as a junior synonym from Anthias to Pseudanthias, among others, by Katayama and Amaoka (1986), Randall and Hutomo (1988), Randall and Pyle (2001) and others again as a valid genus.
