particularities

Depth strongly dependent on the season

The Green Lake is a karst lake in Styria in the municipality of Tragöß-Sankt Katharein in the Oberort district. It is located on the south side of the Hochschwab group .

The lake is dammed up by a landslide mass that slid from the south flank of the Messnerin in the direction of Tragöß in prehistoric times .

As the snowmelt on the surrounding mountain slopes, the lake gently fills with very clear water. The water is therefore cold (5 to 6 ° C) and the water level depends on the season. The water level reaches its greatest height in early summer, when the lake is around 10 meters deep at its deepest point. On the southeast bank is an overflow made with boulders. On the southwest bank you can see the water flowing into the mountain. In autumn it dries up almost completely.

Meadows with hiking trails and benches are then again above the water level.

Pure water absorbs red light components and therefore appears blue-greenish in thick layers. Finely ground rock that is suspended in the water mainly reflects the blue-green parts of the light. See glacier milk

Mountains around the lake divert winds. The lake lies in a hollow that receives a cold air lake. The small lake, which is quite sheltered from the wind, hardly forms any water waves on the surface. This enables a good view of the water from a flat angle. Light limestone on the ground visible between the grass and small amounts of opaque dispersed lime dust contribute to the brightness under water. The lake is perceived as "shimmering emerald green". In large areas of the permanent lakes it lacks its own dark, muddy subsoil. The extraordinarily high visibility in the water is up to 50 meters.

Due to the often calm water surface and the refraction of light on it, one has a wide-angled, sharp view of the forest all around and the steep and rocky mountains from below the water surface. In the supine position when looking vertically upwards, it is possible to have the mountains on the right and left in the field of vision at the same time, as the telephoto effect of the lens of the diving mask is compensated for by the wide-angle effect on the - parallel - water surface.

On September 16, 2014, Ashton Kutcher posted a link to an illustrated English article about the underwater world of the lake on Facebook , which was shared 11,367 times within 17 hours and received over 80,000 likes. On October 25, 2014, the Green Lake was voted Austria's most beautiful hidden place by viewers and a jury on the Austria-wide ORF TV show 9 Places - 9 Treasures . This caused an international rush of tourists at least in 2015.

On October 8, 2015, the Tragöß tourist office announced a ban on diving and any other use (swimming, boating, etc.). This is justified with the negative effect of the swirling up of sediment by water sports and diving activities. The ban has been in effect since January 1, 2016.
