A green smoothie is a mixed drink made from fruit and green leafy vegetables , lettuce leaves or wild herbs with the addition of a little water.

Manufacturing

The preparation takes place due to the higher fiber content in the mixer compared to smoothies made from fruit. Most often, a mixture of fruits and green leafy vegetables is mechanically crushed with the addition of a little water. The list of leafy green vegetables and herbs that can be used includes all raw edible, non-toxic plants. The stand mixer produces a partial cell breakdown . History of origin

The inventor of green smoothies is the Russian Victoria Boutenko , who emigrated to the United States in the 1990s , and a supporter of the raw food movement . In 2004 she mixed the first green smoothie. In her opinion, the leaves of certain vegetables contain more micronutrients than the vegetables themselves. According to Boutenko, only fruit, leafy vegetables and water are allowed as ingredients for a green smoothie, but not root vegetables such as carrots or beetroot . She also recommends changing the green plants regularly, as each leafy vegetable contains certain ingredients. Green smoothies should be drunk on an empty stomach if possible and are also seen as a substitute for a main meal, as they contain enough nutritional energy due to the sugar in the fruit and a lot of fiber ( fiber ) due to the green plants . In addition to kale , spinach or Swiss chard , culinary herbs such as parsley or mint can be used, but also wild herbs such as common dandelion , ground grass or nettles and the leaves of carrots, beetroot or turnips .

criticism

Boutenko's diet and her findings about a “healing power” of green smoothies have not been proven by experiments or clinical studies. According to the Health Claims Regulation , only evidence-based health-related statements may be used in the EU. In practice, these are statements that are listed in the EU Register of nutrition and health claims made on foods . The different variants of an exclusively raw food diet are counted among the ideological forms of nutrition.
