The Grünsee is located in the municipality of Schliersee a good 1500 m southwest of the Spitzingsee , at an altitude of 1393  m . It can be reached by a hiking trail over 350 m from the Grünsee-Alm , which in turn is located at an altitude of 1378  m and is accessible via a farm path from the Valepp-Alm . The area of ​​the lake is 2.31 ha, with a circumference of 500 m. 290 meters south of the lakeshore is the 1602  m high Rotkopf , and 430 meters northwest of the 1580  m high Roßkopf .

The maximum depth of the Grünsee was already estimated at 15 meters in 1884.
