Aristion's tomb from Ephesus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The so-called burial area of Aristion from Ephesus is a preserved grave ensemble of Kerameikos , the most important and largest ancient cemetery in Athens .

The burial area of Aristion from Ephesus is located on an area between the Graves Street and the Holy Road , immediately north of the burial area of Eubius . The grave district was about 6.5 meters by 6.0 meters on a side. On the north side it was bordered by a front wall made of conglomerate blocks, the other sides by adobe walls on rubble stone bases. Today the walls are filled in again. The area was in the first half of the 4th century BC. BC and renewed after a destruction in the second half of the century. Today there is still a base for a grave monument, a large marble Naïskos relief . It faced north to Holy Street, although it was closer to Graves Street. In addition, the base has a round recess in which a marble vessel, probably a lekythos , was placed, probably dedicated to the grave cult .

A tomb, the so-called stele of Aristion from Ephesus (not to be confused with the much better known grave stele of Aristion ), which also gave the burial area its name, was erected by Athanasios S. Rhousopoulos in the course of the excavations of the Athens Archaeological Society in 1870, but probably not found in situ . It belonged to the tomb of an Aristion from Ephesus, son of Arist (i?) On. Their assignment to the grave district is uncertain. Today the stele is in the National Archaeological Museum . Karl Kübler researched the grave district again in 1935/1936, but so far only the graves from the late 5th century BC have been found. Published. The finds from the 4th century BC Are unpublished.
