The sculpture was found in Velanideza in Attica in 1839 . It was made of Pentelic marble and has a height of 2.02 m, the base of 0.24 m. The stele was found along with its base . The top part above the head and the crown are missing. At the upper end of the base an inscription is carved, which gives the name of the grave owner in the genitive: Ἀριστίονος "des Aristion". Aristion is shown as a bearded hoplite, shown in a side view to the right. He wears a thin, short chiton with a corselet over it. In ancient times, this was decorated with colored patterns - meanders , zigzag lines and a star on the shoulder. The rest of the statue was also decorated both extensively and in detail, as remains of red, yellow and blue paint suggest. Aristion continues to wear an Attic helmet and greaves . While the right arm is hanging down at the side, he is holding a spear in his left hand. A horizontal band of inscriptions is incorporated under the standing surface of the bare feet, naming the manufacturer of the stele: ἔργον Ἀριστοκλέος " Aristocles ' Work ". Some details are particularly worked out, such as the wavy beard, the hair or, in some cases, the muscles on the arms, legs and chest. The work is considered to be one of the best sculptures of the late archaic era .

Possibly Aristion is the sculptor Aristion of Paros . The stele must not be confused with the stele of Aristion from Ephesus .
