Aristion of Paros
Aristion of Paros was a Greek sculptor and worked in the 6th century BC. The works ascribed to him are from 540 to 525 BC. Dated. It is not documented by ancient writers, but some of his signatures were found on grave monuments. In 1839 and 1858, for example, three fragments of the base of the funerary monument of Antilochus , bearing Aristion's signature, were found in Athens . Another statue base from the Kerameikos was dedicated to a deceased named Xenophantes. The archaeologist Brunilde Sismondo Ridgway suspects that Aristion also created the east and north friezes of the Siphnian treasury in Delphi . Elena Walter-Karydi vehemently rejects equating with this sculptor, named Master B , for stylistic reasons.
A base with another signature by Aristion, which was installed in the Panagia church in Merenda, had been known for a long time. In 1972 excavations in the vicinity, at the ancient site of Myrrhinous , discovered two statues - a male Kouros and a female Kore named Phrasikleia . It was immediately recognized that the base belonged to the statue of the Kor and could clearly prove this. It is likely that the kouros also came from Aristion.
It has been suggested by some researchers that the grave stele of Aristion , which was created by Aristocles and depicts the dead as a hoplite , stood on the tomb of Aristion of Paros. It is dated between 520 and 510 BC. Dated.
