Myrrhinous
Myrrhinous or Myrrhinus ( Greek Μυρρινούς ) was an Attic demos of the Phyle Pandionis in ancient times . It was the capital of the coastal Trittys Myrrhinous. Its name is derived from the ancient Greek word for myrtle ( Greek μύρτον ), which still thrives in the area today. Myrrhinous was southeast of Markopoulos and north of Mount Merenda.
Lore
Strabo reports that Myrrhinous was between Halai Araphenides and Probalinthos , which is not entirely true. Pausanias mentions a sanctuary of Artemis in Myrrhinous. Here was a wooden picture depicting Artemis Kolainis. The nickname Kolainis is said to come from a king Kolainos who ruled Myrrhinous before the time of Kekrops I. Phaedrus , son of Pythocles, and Eurymedon came from Myrrhinous .
exploration
Systematic excavations were carried out below Mount Merenda from 1951 to 1972. Here, inscriptions came to light that prove the location of the place at this point. In 1972 the archaeologist E. Mastrokostas discovered a Kouros and the Kore Phrasikleia on the grave road , which were in a very good state of preservation and came from the artist Aristion of Paros . During the construction of the Markopoulo Olympic Equestrian Center from 1998 to 2004, most of the Myrrhinous demos and remnants of prehistoric settlement were discovered. So far, several temples have been found: the temple of Artemis Kolainis, a temple of Apollo and a temple of Athena , which is now the place of the Panagia church of Merenda. In the 4th century BC A sanctuary to Aphrodite was built in BC , which was surrounded by a wall and also included a bath and a garden. The existence of a sanctuary for Zeus Phratrios is derived from an inscription . The rich grave goods, marble statues and tombstones prove that Myrrhinous was a wealthy demos and lived mainly from agriculture.
