Grace Hall Hemingway
Grace Hall Hemingway (born June 15, 1872 in Chicago , Illinois , † June 28, 1951 in Memphis , Tennessee ) was an American opera singer and painter .
Life
Grace Ernestine Hall was the daughter of the wealthy wholesaler Ernest Miller Hall and his wife Caroline, b. Hancock. After attending various schools in her native Chicago, she was a student at Oak Park High School from 1886 to 1891 . From 1895 she received singing lessons for the Grand opéra from Luiza Cappiani in New York . In 1896 she made her debut as a contralto soloist with the Apollo Club at Madison Square Garden , later she sang for the Metropolitan Opera, among others . In 1896 she married the doctor Clarence Hemingway . The couple had six children together, one of their sons was Ernest Hemingway . Grace Hall Hemingway began painting at the age of 52. She attended the Art Institute of Chicago and various other art schools. From 1925 she painted over 600 pictures, mostly landscapes. She was a member of the Oak Park Art League, of which she was director for six years.
The strained relationship between mother and son finally went so far that Ernest did not show up for her funeral in Oak Park in 1951.
